The Canada Aviation Museum challenged artists from around the world to interpret the 2009 Artflight contest theme, Miles, Milestones and Moments. Artists were encouraged to interpret the theme with originality and to reach beyond and experiment with their techniques. This exhibition will showcase 27 works of art including the winning entries in this competition. Over 60 works of art were submitted for consideration, including two and three dimensional entries.
Winners of this edition of Artflight were selected during an official ceremony on May 14, 2009 at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa.
Virginia Ivanicki from Vancouver, British-Columbia, took top honours for the work entitled Havards Over Home Base CZBB. Second Prize went to John Walmsley from Stouffville, Ontario for Mosquito Time; Third Prize was won by Linda Brubacher from Elmira, Ontario for Remains: Canso Nightflyer.
The jury members is comprised of Mr. Charles C. Hill, Curator of Canadian Art at the National Gallery of Canada and Member of the Order of Canada, Mr. Michael Martchenko, award winning artist, illustrator and author of children’s literature and member of the CAAA, and Stephen Quick, Associate Director at the Canada Aviation Museum and visual artist with a background in the Canadian publishing and heritage fields.
The Canada Aviation Museum has held regularly this aviation art competition and exhibition, since its inception in 1992, with over 1,100 works having been submitted and over 600 pieces of aviation art having been selected for display, showcasing the work of Canadian and International artists.
The competition itself has a number of goals: to encourage artists to work with aviation subjects; to stimulate experimentation with a wide range of styles in the depiction of the subject, and to provide a stimulating and changing addition for visitors to the Canada Aviation Museum.
