School Zone

Dear Teachers,

What better way to celebrate the centennial of flight in Canada than with a whole new slate of school programs? Many months of hard work have gone into refreshing old favourites and designing new adventures to meet the requirements of both the Ontario and Quebec curricula.

While we’ve enjoyed the process of testing new experiments (not too many jobs give you an excuse to fly paper airplanes into your Director’s office!), and are extremely proud of our efforts, our programs won’t be truly complete until we have students and teachers to share them with!

As you go through our revamped School Zone, you’ll notice that we’ve changed the format of our programs. Most programs now run 90 minutes or more. The increased time allows us to include both a tour of the aircraft and time for more great hands-on experiments and activities.

You will also notice that we’ve taken our program descriptions beyond the basics to provide you with specific details about the programs, pre-visit activities and helpful tips for a smooth visit. And of course, we still outline the specific curriculum expectations targeted by each program.

Not satisfied to rest on its laurels, the Museum is already hard at work on its next big project. Starting this fall, you will notice major undertakings on the Museum grounds as we re-align the roadways, build new entrances and an auditorium and, of particular interest to educators, two new state-of-the-art learning spaces!

Imagine visiting the collection with your class, looking at wing shapes, then being able to carve out the shapes and conduct wind-tunnel tests, graph the changes on a SmartBoardTM and discuss the results as a group. As the students head back in to the main Museum, they will be able to revisit and discuss the aircraft with newfound interest and understanding. I can hardly contain my excitement when I think of all the great possibilities this new expansion will create!

Do you Facebook? In addition to all the great resources our website has to offer, the Museum is also now on Facebook! Become a fan and watch for updates on the construction, interesting information from our curators, and news from this office as well.

Enjoy your tour of our new School Zone and feel free to drop me a line!
