Check Out Canada Day at the Canada Aviation Museum

Ottawa—In their annual tradition the Canada Aviation Museum is opening its doors and grounds free with a full schedule to celebrate on Canada Day. A great site to mark this special occasion, the Museum offers free admission and parking and a facility for all weather predictions - sun, rain or summer heat. The day’s activities include:

Aviation VIP Visits

Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Dr. Dave Williams will give two presentations at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on ‘The Impossible Made Possible’ highlighting Canadian aerospace engineering achievements. To honour these achievements, Dr. Williams will also present the Museum with 3 mementoes which he took to space during his last shuttle mission — 2 from the Avro Arrow and a Museum stamp. Some special time has also been set aside for autographs but visitors to the Museum that day should make a point of stopping by the Canadian Space Agency booth to get stamped by the stamp that flew in space!

Snowbirds Team. Back by popular demand the entire crew of Canada’s famous aerobatic team will ‘touch down’ at the Museum from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to sign autographs before their annual Canada Day flight over Parliament Hill.

AWACs Team. The crew from this highly technical and visible Boeing E-3 will take time out to meet and greet the public (2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) after flying by at 1:30p.m.. (Weather permitting)

In The Sky

Also flying by will be a historic Canso from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton at approximately 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., weather permitting it will be a truly unique site for aviation fans in the region. Always dynamic are the demonstrations by the Stetson Flyers remote control aircraft organization (12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m..), but a definite crowd pleaser are the parachute jumps at 12:15p.m.. And of course the public can take to the air with introductory flights offered by the Rockcliffe Flying Club and/or go up in a vintage aircraft such as the de Havilland Canada Chipmunk or the Stearman open cockpit biplane.

On Special Display

For the first time since its arrival in the Museum the CT-114 Snowbird Tutor will not only be on public display, but a photographer will be on hand to take pictures in front of this patriotic symbol. ($) The de Havilland Canada Buffalo used by Canada’s Sky Hawks parachute team will be joined on display for the day by a Griffon Helicopter. This is the only day that visitors have the opportunity to get cockpit tours inside many of the Museum’s aircraft and hear the roar of some of the engines as they are ‘run-up’.

For the Kids

More fun than ever before with face painting ($), a majic show and crafts galore including; Boomerang gliders, Cartoon Capers, Canada Windsocks, and an aerobatics mural.

Rounding out the day are the funky Celtic sounds of Mark Haines and Tom Leighton at the outside band shell and the Discovery Channel website, exn.ca on hand to send e-mail postcards to prove how much fun there was to be had on Canada Day at the Canada Aviation Museum.

The Canada Aviation Museum is located at the intersection of the Aviation and Rockcliffe Parkways, just 10 minutes from Parliament Hill. The Museum will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Canada Day, but most of the special activities will end by 4 p.m. Admission and ample parking are FREE.
